Understanding the Map Rankings Tab in Your Customer Portal
See where your business shows up on Google Maps across your whole service area, week by week, and who you are competing with for each search.
The Map Rankings tab shows the same Map Rank Tracker your SEO specialist walks through in your monthly report, updated every week and available any time you log in. This article explains where to find it, what each part means, and how to read it without a specialist on the call.
Where to find it
- Log in to your Customer Portal.
- Open the SEO & AEO page.
- Click the Map Rankings tab, next to Local SEO and Search Console.
Heads up: If you do not see the tab, it is either still being set up for your account or not part of your plan yet. The tab itself will tell you which, and you can reach your specialist team from there.
What the map shows
Google ranks your business differently depending on where the searcher is standing. The map spreads checkpoints across your service area, and each pin shows your rank for someone searching from that spot. The line above the map tells you the area covered and how many checkpoints are in it.
Use the three dropdowns at the top to change the view:
- Show switches between Rankings (where you rank today) and Change since last scan (how each pin moved).
- Search term picks which tracked keyword the map is showing.
- Scan date lets you look back at earlier scans. The newest is marked (latest).
- Location appears only if you have more than one location with its own tracker. Pick a location to switch the whole tab to it.
The table below the map lists every tracked search term. Click one to switch the map to it.
Pin colors
| Color | Rank | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Green | 1 to 3 | You are in the map pack, the three businesses Google shows first. This is where the calls come from. |
| Yellow | 4 to 10 | You rank, but the searcher has to tap "more places" to see you. |
| Red | 11 to 20 | You are visible only to someone who keeps scrolling. |
| Gray | 20+ | You are not appearing at that location for that search term. |
In the Rankings view, a green ring around a pin means that spot improved since the last scan and a red ring means it slipped. Hover over any pin on desktop, or tap it on your phone, to see the exact rank and the change since last scan.
The two numbers at the top
- Average spot on the map is your average rank across every checkpoint for the selected search term. Lower is better. The small trend line shows how it has moved scan over scan, and the label underneath tells you whether you moved up, slipped, or held steady.
- Share of voice measures how much of the local search results you own for that term, as a percentage. It accounts for both how often and how high you rank, which makes it the best single trend line for "is this working."
Neither number has a universal "good" value. Your service area, how many competitors are in it, and where your address sits all change what is achievable. Read them as trends over three to six months.
Who you are up against
Beside the map is a card listing the top businesses on the map for the selected search term and scan date, with their rating, review count, and average spot. Your own business is marked You.
Click any competitor to see their map for the same search term and date, so you can compare where they rank against where you rank. Click Back to your map to return. Your own numbers at the top of the page stay put while you look around. The link icon on a competitor's row opens their listing on Google Maps.
Tip: If a competitor is green across an area where you are gray, look at their review count and whether they have a public office address. Those two factors explain most gaps.
How often it updates
Your map is scanned once a week. The date of the last scan and the date of the next one are shown under the map, so you always know when fresh data is coming. Your monthly SEO report still comes from your specialist as a recorded walkthrough; this tab is for checking in between reports.
If the tab tells you the latest scan has not come through, your specialist team has already been alerted and is looking into it. You can keep using the most recent scan in the meantime.
Messages you might see
- We're setting this up. Your tracker is being connected. Nothing is needed from you; your specialist team will let you know when it is live.
- Your first scan is on its way. The tracker is connected and the first weekly scan has not run yet. The date it will appear is shown on screen.
- You're looking at the scan from [date]. You picked an older scan date. Click Back to the latest scan to return.
- Map rankings aren't part of your plan yet. The tab is not included in your current plan. Use the Ask about Map Rankings button to reach your specialist team.
