This article explains how the CRM's automation version control feature allows users to view, preview, and revert to previous versions of their automation while managing contacts currently in the workflow.
The CRM offers automation revision control, allowing you to return to a previous version of your automation anytime you make changes. This feature is available across all plan types—Starter, Plus, Professional, and Enterprise.
Automation revisions are incredibly useful if you’ve made edits to your automation but want to undo those changes and go back to an earlier version. Whether your automation is active or inactive, every change you make is automatically saved and stored as a version.
How Automation Revisions Work
To access earlier versions of your automation, follow these steps:
- In the automation workflow builder, locate the “turn back time” icon in the upper-right corner.
- Clicking this icon opens a list of all past versions of your automation.
- Each version in the list is labeled with a timestamp and shows the avatar of the user who made the change.
- Hovering over a version will reveal a “Preview” button and display a short note about what was changed and who changed it.
- Click “Preview” to open a modal window showing a snapshot of that version.
- To revert to that version, click “Use This.” The system will restore the automation to the selected version.
What Happens to Contacts Already in the Automation?
If you revert your automation while contacts are still inside it, ActiveCampaign helps you manage their flow:
- The system will show you all the current “Wait” actions with contacts in them.
- You can decide whether to:
- Remove those contacts from the automation entirely, or
- Transfer them into an existing “Wait” step from the version you’re restoring.
- You’ll see the available “Wait” actions during the revision preview and can select one.
- Once chosen, click “Use This”, and the contacts will be moved to the designated step in the updated version.
With this version control feature, making changes to your automation is safer and more flexible—giving you peace of mind and full control over your automation workflows.
